Private & Group Lessons
Private Music Instruction
San Jose Academy of Music currently offers private one-on-one lessons for the following instruments: Piano, Voice, Violin, Guitar, Bass, Ukulele, Drums, Harp, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Theory, Composition, Audio Recording, and Music Production for all levels and ages.
Instrument technique, posture and position, ear-training, and music theory such as note-reading and rhythm are emphasized. Above all, musicality and expression are explored.
Our instructors also provide preparation for Royal Conservatory of Music certification (we are an RCM founding school!) and Music Teachers' Association of California Certificate of Merit exams upon request.
Group Music Instruction
Please inquire about group class scheduling and rates.
Your lesson time has been reserved for you with a mutual understanding that we will have lessons at the same day and time each week. When students enroll, they are reserving a space in the studio and in their instructor’s schedule. Payment for this time slot is made at the beginning of each month - it is your choice whether or not to come to that time slot. If a scheduling conflict arises, please feel free to speak with us and we will be happy to work with you to find a time that will work best for everyone.
We ask that:
- Students come to lessons on time and prepared with all assignments, music, and necessary materials.
In return, we will provide:
- An enriching musical education and warm learning environment for all of our students.
- To always be punctual and well-prepared.
- To teach with kindness and respect.
- And to always be there for our students for any reason.
Lessons are offered to children with autism and other special needs requirements. Skills that will be emphasized are: piano technique, piano theory, music reading, listening, rhythm, and following directions.
Tuition & Billing
A one-time registration fee of $60 per student is required upon enrollment.
Tuition is a monthly rate. Although tuition is calculated by how many lessons a student has that month, tuition covers more than just the time an instructor spends with a student. It includes individualized lesson plans tailored to each student, an instructor’s training and experience, preparation time, development of teaching materials (this sometimes includes pieces composed specifically for a student), and recital preparation.
Monthly rates (for weekly lessons) are:
- 30-minute Lessons - $160 per 4-week month, $200 per 5-week month
- 45-minute Lessons - $240 per 4-week month, $300 per 5-week month
- 60-minute Lessons - $320 per 4-week month, $400 per 5-week month
Monthly tuition is due by the first lesson of each month and is to be submitted to SJAM Management at the front desk or to your instructor. Payments can be made via debit/credit card, cash, check, and/or online bill pay through your bank.
*Please note that a late fee of $20/month will be applied to any tuition submitted after the first lesson of the month. Returned checks require a fee of $30 to be added to the tuition.
Cancellation and Make-Up Policy
We are closed and will not hold lessons on the following holidays: Memorial Day (last Monday of May), Independence Day (4th of July), Labor Day (first Monday of September), Halloween (October 31st), Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November), and Winter Break (usually 2 weeks that include Christmas and New Year’s Day – exact dates TBA each year). Other holidays are to be scheduled at SJAM Management’s discretion.
Cancellation by an instructor: Your instructor or another available instructor will make-up the missed lesson. If a make-up is not possible, the missed lesson will be credited towards your next month’s tuition.
Cancellation by a student/parent: As a courtesy, we ask that you notify SJAM Management or your instructor about vacation plans (and exact dates that lessons will be missed), or any occasion on which a lesson must be missed, by the beginning of the month. Absences with more than 48 hours' notice are excused absences and may be given a free make-up lesson per teacher availability. Absences with less than 48 hours' notice or no notice at all are unexcused absences and given no make-up unless paid for. No refunds or payment credits will be provided for cancellations made by a student or parent.
Leave of Absence or Discontinuance
If a student will be absent for more than four weeks a time, they will lose their reserved spot in the calendar and will not be guaranteed the same lesson time slot with their instructor upon returning. Your time slot may be reserved if you submit tuition payment for the time you will be gone in full and in advance.
If the need arises to discontinue lessons, we ask that you give us four weeks’ notice in advance as a courtesy. For both leaves of absence and termination of lessons, tuition is non-refundable.
Parental Role & Scope of Study
Students under the age of 8 are expected to have a parent present at each lesson. The parent’s role in the development of their child’s music education is imperative. Practice should be monitored and instilled in a daily routine. We recommend a practice routine at the same time everyday, making practice habitual. Music takes discipline and motivation in order to succeed, and both parents and teachers should instill these skills.
Scope of Study
To become a well-rounded musician, it is essential that students be actively engaged in all facets of music study, including theory, sight-reading, technique, and performance. We highly encourage students to participate in the 4-5 recitals we hold each year. Composition, singing, and other artistic activities are also encouraged.
Recitals and Performances
We offer several performance opportunities year-round and students are encouraged to participate. There is a non-refundable recital fee of $35 for each recital to help cover venue costs and other fees. Audience admission is free - bring your family and friends!
