Beginner’s Steps to Perfection

  • Say note names out loud (G,G,G,D)
  • Say the rhythm. For quarter- notes say ta; for two eight-notes say tee-tee. Or say words like pie for a quarter-note, apple for two eight-notes, and huckleberry for four sixteenth-notes, or just la la la. Be sure to sat shh every time there is a rest.
  • Say the note names in rhythm(GG,GG,D)
  • Finger the notes on your instrument and say the note names in rhythm.
  • Pianists play one hand at a time.
  • Play without making mistakes very, very, very, very slowly.
  • Add articulation.
  • Play with the metronome very slowly.
  • Gradually work up to tempo.
  • Impress your teacher.
